ACTIVITIES

With so many activities in and around Bergrivier, you’ll never run out of things to do! Nature-lovers would appreciate the variety of fauna and flora in the area. There are mainly three ecosystems that intertwine here–fynbos, valley bushveld, and forest. There is a great variety of fynbos plants that can especially be seen as you travel deeper into the bush. Look out for the Paranomus Reflexus (a flower-bearing shrub) that is native to the Eastern Cape and is found exclusively between Humansdorp and Port Elizabeth. Avid birdwatchers would find appeal in the number of bird species that makes Bergrivier their home. It is not uncommon to see the beautiful Knysna loerie in its colourful brilliance.

Currently, we have a bird list that includes 171 species–and we’re still counting! The distinctive call of the fish eagle can often be heard and at night time the nightjars’ calls are audible. Animals that are indigenous to the area include bushbuck, rhebuck, baboons, monkeys, meerkats, and porcupines. Nature comes alive at night with several nocturnal animals like the genet, bush pig, honey badger, and skunk. In the evening guests are greeted by a beautiful starlit sky–any stargazer’s dream!

Those wanting to get active can hike or run along any of our seven scenic hiking trails. Many of the routes take you to the river and some offer beautiful views of the waterfall and mountain pool. Our newest addition is an exciting 4×4 route that takes you to the top of the hills, the valley, and the river. The 17.5 km route can be completed in two to three hours. This route is also usable by mountain bikers.

Besides the relaxing atmosphere, fresh air, and sounds of nature, there are several options for activities that would appeal to those who chose to use their accommodation as a home base for adventure outside Bergrivier.
